For a few years now, I have been recovering from a very serious mental breakdown that nearly took my life. During this mental breakdown, I did not take 3 wounds on my feet very seriously. Luckily the wounds on the right foot healed well.
I wasn’t so lucky on the left foot, acquiring osteomyelitis and septic arthritis in the left big toe from an ulcer/wound that refuses to close.
On June 1st, I was once again admitted to the hospital for this. This time my wound care doctor/podiatrist was insistent on amputating my big toe because the risk of the infection spreading. I got an X-Ray, MRI and a plethora of other tests done. The MRI showed that the osteomyelitis looks the same as it did in previous tests but that the adjacent toes “were beginning to shine” meaning that they were beginning to get osteomyelitis as well.
I was previously discharged from the hospital on a separate occasion with a PICC line inserted through my arm to my heart to administer IV antibiotics from home. After consulting with my infectious disease specialist, I decided to go through another round of aggressive IV antibiotics to see if the infection would clear up and the ulcer/ wound would close.
The thing that makes this so difficult is that bone infections take an extremely long time to heal on their own. If you add the open wound, it really complicates things.
It has been one hard decision after another lately but I am getting by one day at a time. I am not sure what the future will hold but I am continuing to fight and do what is necessary to recover from this life altering mental breakdown and all that happened as a result. I have had a really good support system and those who have seen what I have been through, are understanding and supportive.
